Start by separating a connection fault from a strip, power-supply or controller fault. Disconnect power before opening or reseating the connector. Check the exact width and contact layout, then inspect insertion and polarity. A connector that looks closed can still be mismatched or fail to contact the intended pads.
Before you adjust the connector
This guide covers selection and visual checks for low-voltage LED strip connections. Use the instructions for your strip, connector and power supply. Do not work on mains wiring or try to repair a damaged power supply. Stop using an assembly with discoloration, melted plastic or a burning smell and have the cause assessed before replacement.
Record what fails: the whole strip, only the section after the joint, one colour channel, or an intermittent connection. Note whether the problem began after installation, moving the cable or replacing a strip. These details are more useful for diagnosis than ordering a similar-looking connector immediately.
Match the symptom to a useful check
| Symptom | Possible causes to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing lights after the joint | Polarity, pad contact, incomplete insertion or a fault elsewhere in the circuit. | Disconnect power; compare the strip markings with the wiring and inspect the contact area. |
| The connection flickers when moved | Poor retention, wrong housing size, damaged pads or cable strain. | Inspect fit and support the cable; do not bend the contacts as a workaround. |
| Only one colour or channel fails | Channel order, one missing contact, or a strip/controller fault. | Compare every channel label, not only the total number of pins. |
| The joint will not close normally | Wrong strip thickness, nearby components, coating or the wrong connector mechanism. | Do not force it. Recheck the exact model and assembly instructions. |
| The strip dims along a long run | Power distribution, conductor sizing, strip loading or connection resistance. | Have the circuit reviewed rather than assuming a wider connector will solve it. |
Check contact and polarity
With power off, inspect where each connector contact meets the strip. It must align with the intended connection area; a cover layer or a soldered reel joint can prevent the expected fit. Follow the strip maker's marked connection points and connector instructions.
Track the positive, negative and any channel markings through the entire join. Wire colour alone is not sufficient evidence of polarity. For general installation context, Armacost Lighting's connector guide explains copper-pad contact, and its polarity guide explains matching circuit markings. Those instructions describe its products; they do not establish compatibility with a VEXIRA model.
Check the model before changing the installation
Write down PCB width, pin count, pad layout and COB or SMD construction. Compare them with the connector ordering code. An 8 mm and a 10 mm 2-pin connector are different mechanical options, even where their intended electrical role is similar.
Use our 8 mm versus 10 mm comparison and COB versus SMD guide to narrow the selection. For a corner, check the connection route and available space instead of folding the strip sharply to make a straight connector fit.
After correctly assembling the specified parts, check cable routing and strain relief. The enclosure or lighting channel should not push the wire sideways against the joint. Do not use adhesive tape or pressure from the diffuser to compensate for incorrect retention.
When to replace a connector or request a review
Replace damaged parts with an approved, compatible model. If a properly assembled sample still fails, keep the strip and connector references together and ask for a joint review. Repeatedly reseating or squeezing a mismatched connector does not confirm suitability.
For a batch issue, record affected and tested quantities, the connector model, strip reference and any production changes. Keep a representative sample so the fault can be reproduced. Do not switch the whole order to a new model based on one successful bench connection.
Send the information needed to identify the problem
- A close-up of the disconnected strip end and its copper pads.
- A photo of the connector and its model reference.
- PCB width, contact count, COB/SMD type and connection route.
- Supply voltage, expected load and cable requirement.
- The symptom, when it occurs, and whether other sections work.
VEXIRA can review model selection and sample requirements from this information. Browse solderless LED strip connectors or tool-free LED connector formats after identifying the required fit. Replacement suitability is confirmed against the exact strip and connector.
